Kolby Allard Scouting Report

Kolby Allard Scouting Report

Kolby Allard was a first round draft pick by the Braves in 2015 (14th overall). Allard's stock took a hit prior to the draft as he had a stress reaction in his back forcing him to miss a little over a month of baseball. Had that not happened, he potentially could have been a top-5 pick. So to say the Braves got a steal in Allard would be a understatement. He ended up having a minor procedure on his back following a brief stint in the GCL in 2015. He is expected to be in great shape and ready to go for 2016.

Allard's GCL debut was impressive as he K'ed 12 in 6IP including a striking out five in two innings during his second outing. He flashed a 92-94 fastball with late life, a solid curve the has the makings of #2 pitch and outstanding command for a teenager. Allard should be fine to begin the 2016 season and the sky is the limit for the young left-hander.

Prior to the 2015 draft, we had Allard rated as one of the top High School draft prospects in the Nation and early pick  in the MLB Mock Draft.

Commitment: UCLA

Pre-Draft Scouting Grades:

Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 55

Armed with a mid 90's fastball and a devastating breaking ball, Allard becomes a projectable lefty with solid command. Allard has pitched very limited in 2015 as he suffered a "stress reaction" in his back that has sidelined him since the middle of March. This injury made him miss eight weeks but he still profiles as a solid starter. Allard does not have a prototypical pitchers body but has proven already to be a stud.

Offering a 93-95mph fastball and a above-average curve. His changeup has shown signs of life but it clearly needs more seasoning. His control is also a positive for Allard as he commands the strike zone routinely. He dominated with Team USA propelling them to a gold medal in the 18U Pan American Championships in Mexico. Allard struck out a whopping 17 batters in the 29 he faced. He has committed to UCLA. Kolby Allard was selected 14th overall by the Atlanta Bravs in the 2015 MLB Draft.

What Everyone Is Saying About Kolby Allard?

This is a kid that you target early on in the summer. These are kids you follow. I saw him throw at the bullpen the night I went and saw him and I thought it was a pipe dream. I said, 'There's no way this kid gets to us,'" Bridges said of the first prep southpaw taken in the draft. "But we were fortunate that some unfortunate things happened, and here we are. - Braves AGM John Coppolella & Head of Scouting Brian Bridges

Atlanta Braves

During Allard's brief GCL debut, during which he struck out 12 and allowed just one hit in six innings, he was throwing his fastball in the 90-94 mph range. He's shown the ability to reach back for more in the past. Allard has a plus curve, with some evaluators seeing it as a 70 eventually.

Allard has a seemingly effortless delivery with smooth action in his arm. It helps him to harness his command and pound the strike zone. Allard’s small stature is going to require him to be a control artist, and thus far the results have shown that.

The southpaw fanned 17 of the 29 batters he faced while displaying a three-pitch repertoire that includes a 92-94 mph fastball that touches 96, a plus curveball with tight rotation and a developing changeup that shows promising fade and depth.

Baseball America

He's still just 18 years old, but Allard could be a fast-riser for the Braves if his health cooperates.
