San Diego Padres Farm System The city of San Diego is the epicenter of some of the top baseball talent in the country. On the college level, University of San Diego and San Diego State always stockpile a ton of local talent and some of the best players in the country because of the magnificent weather and the beaches. The Padres made waves this offseason by acquiring a brand new outfield and while simultaneously trading away some of their aging players. The Padres did give up (and in Trea Turners case will eventually give up) some talent in exchange. LHP Max Fried was arguably their best pitching prospect whom they packaged and flipped to the Braves for a middle-of-the-order bat in Justin Upton. In the 2014 draft they selected Michael Gettys in the 2nd round out of Gainesville HS in Georgia. Gettys is first and foremost he is an amazing athlete with impressive raw talent. Like many high school draft picks he will learn to cut down on his strikeouts but he oozes with talent. He has potential to be a 5-tool player with eye-popping speed. Gettys stands out as their best pick from the 2014 class of solid selections that should produce multiple big leaguers. For the Padres long-term success Austin Hedges really needs to deliver. No pressure of course as he headlines the Padres top 10 prospects list. He is the #1 catching prospect in all of baseball and carries a very mature skillset way beyond his years. (Top 10 Catching Prospects LIST) Outfielders Rymer Liriano and Hunter Refroe have amazing raw power and in Liriano’s case, flashy defensive skills.
