Michael Matuella Scouting Report:
Matuella should be come the second first-round pick out of Duke since 2012 when the Blue Jays selected Marcus Stroman #22 overall. Matuella has the highest ceiling out of all the pitching prospects that will be drafted in 2015. He has four pitch arsenal that is highlighted by his 95-97 mph heater. He has an improving changeup that he has the confidence to throw in any count. At 6′ 7″ he is a physically imposing pitcher. His one knock is his injuries specifically in his back. He was diagnosed with spondylolysis, a manageable defect of the vertebra in the lower back that has created discomfort for him. The back issue limited his total innings the last two seasons and summer ball. In early April 2015, Michael Matuella will undergo Tommy John Surgery. How does that effect his draft status? Because of the minimal amount of innings pitched during his college career, he still profiles as a first-round pick but more than likely will fall to between picks 10-15. Matuella was drafted in the third round, 78th overall by the Texas Rangers. His signed for $2-million which was significantly over the slot value ($777,600).

[…] We see the Marlins selecting Matuella at 12. He is a great pitching prospect that will undergo Tommy John surgery this spring but his back issues scare a lot of teams. He was diagnosed with spondylolysis, a manageable defect of the vertebra in the lower back last year. 97mph heater that jumps on hitters is worth waiting for.
